The American Bulldog is a breed originating in the United States of America and is currently not recognized by the FCI.
Character
The American Bulldog has a strong and courageous character.
Appearance
It is classified into two categories with their own characteristics: Standard: a dog that appears leaner and more athletic. Classic: a dog that appears larger and more powerful. The eyes should be round or almond-shaped, medium-sized and set far apart, black or dark brown. Other colors are accepted but not preferred. The muzzle should be square and broad. The jaws are very muscular and large . The lips are fleshy but not pendulous, preferably pigmented black. There are also variations in the muzzle for the two categories: Standard: the muzzle should be 30% to 40% of the total head length and Classic: the muzzle should be 25% to 35% of the total head length. There should be 42 / 44 large teeth. Regarding the bite, the standard category has a tight reverse scissor or pincer bite and must be moderately undershot. The classic should preferably have an undershot bite between 65 and 130 mm, but a reverse scissor bite is also accepted. In both types, the teeth should not be visible when the mouth is closed. The nose is preferably black, but red, brown or gray are also accepted. The ears should be medium-sized and may be folded forward or rose-shaped. The neck should be very muscular and medium in length, slightly arched from the shoulders to the head. The body is compact and moderately short, powerful, athletic and well balanced. It should have good elasticity, and the topline should rise slightly from the withers to the rump. The chest should be deep, broad and powerful. The limbs should be straight and well balanced. The ribcage should be neither narrow nor too broad, and the elbows should not turn outward or inward. The tail is low-set, thick at the base and tapering toward the tip. The shoulders are well muscled and well defined, giving an appearance of great strength. The legs are strong, straight and muscular; the hind legs should be slightly angulated and parallel. The hind limbs should have considerable substance with well-defined muscles, not as broad as the shoulders but well balanced. The coat is short and ranges from soft to harsh. It may be completely white with all shades, or brown, red or light brown, and piebald.
Historical notes
It descends from Old English Bulldog specimens, which were brought to America by British settlers, and has retained their main characteristics, unlike the modern English Bulldog, which has been transformed into a small companion dog.
