The Affenpinscher is fearless, courageous and very attentive. Although not particularly large, it is an excellent watchdog, also thanks to its natural inclination to defend its owner and family. Affectionate and always devoted, it is an intelligent dog that respects commands and can also live alongside young children.
Appearance
The Affenpinscher is a small dog with a compact build and a harsh coat. Its proportions are harmonious, and its head is small, rounded, muscular and robust. The skull is round with a domed forehead. The muzzle is short and straight. The lips are pigmented, with jaws that have a scissor bite. When the mouth is closed, the canines and incisors must not be visible and the tongue must be visible. The eyes are dark and round, with well-pigmented rims. The ears are set high and V-shaped. The neck is straight and muscular, without dewlap. The Affenpinscher’s body is compact and robust, with the topline sloping down from the withers to the hindquarters. The back is short and firm, with a short, strong loin and short croup. The chest is fairly broad, with the abdomen slightly tucked up. The tail is saber- or sickle-shaped. The Affenpinscher has strong, parallel limbs that are not set close together. The shoulders are muscular, with oblique shoulder blades and arms well attached to the body. The elbows are straight, with proportionate, strong forearms. The front feet are short and round, with tough, elastic pads and black nails. The hind limbs have a muscular, broad thigh, long, sturdy legs and hocks of medium height. The hind feet are slightly longer than the front feet, with well-arched toes and black nails. The coat is harsh and dense, but the head is the breed’s most distinctive feature. On the skull, the hair grows longer, almost giving the impression of a small bush that continues to the eyebrows and surrounds the eyes, forming a sort of crown. The beard and cheek tufts complete the face. The Affenpinscher’s coat is pure black, with a black undercoat.
History
The Affenpinscher is a dog of ancient origin descended from ancestors found in southern Germany. It is said that Albrecht Dürer depicted them in woodcuts as early as the late 1400s. At the beginning of the 1900s, Affenpinschers were very popular, especially among people of high social standing.
Lifestyle
The Affenpinscher adapts well to its owner’s various lifestyles. It can live in an apartment but, because of its lively temperament, needs several daily walks.
